Joshua Tree National Park, one of the closest national parks to Indio, was established as a monument in 1936 and became a national park in 1994.
Joshua Tree National Monument was established on August 10, 1936, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to protect the region's unique desert landscape and ecology. The protected area remained a monument for 58 years until October 31, 1994, when it was redesignated as Joshua Tree National Park under the Desert Protection Act. The park preserves two distinct desert ecosystems—the higher-elevation Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert—that meet within its boundaries, creating habitats for specialized plants and animals found nowhere else.
Today, Joshua Tree National Park offers hiking trails of varying difficulty, rock climbing on distinctive boulder formations, camping under dark skies ideal for stargazing, and access to historic sites and ranger-led tours. The park sits close to Indio and other Coachella Valley communities, making it an accessible destination for weekend visitors and families who return season after season. The park's southern vistas include views down toward the Coachella Valley and the towns that surround it.
